Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative talents in her early years because of her Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse who worked night shifts so that she could dedicate her time to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay immediately was captivated with that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as a vehicle for activism. DuVernay had an aunt who was aware of her social circle and taught her how to utilize the arts as a means of expression. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and raised. DuVernay's dad recalled the protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer and was motivated to make a documentary about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. After graduating she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism when she was just a young student. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given an assignment to watch the home and looking through the trash belonging to one of the jury. Her work left her dissatisfied by journalism and she decided to move towards the field of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small shortly after she graduated from the college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. The company launched a number of promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
